Tour: South Africa Surf & Turf

[Back to Eco Tours]

Now that South Africa has emerged from the shroud of apartheid, its dramatic coastline, world-class accommodations, and models of conservation can stand out in the light. We begin our journey in Cape Town, the cosmopolitan hub at the tip of the continent. In the shadow of the dramatic Table Mountain, discover the original Victorian touches and the modern additions that make the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront a destination all itself. Your room at the Cape Grace will provide the perfect view of this beautiful harbor; but its world-class interior may tempt you to stay inside. The French-inspired Cape Grace was crowned no less than the world's number one hotel by Conde Nast Traveler's 2000 Readers' Choice Awards. It received top marks in location, rooms, and service, scoring the highest rating ever in the poll. What better base for your forays into this amazing part of the world. Spend a morning at Robben Island, the harsh prison home of Nelson Mandela, now a tribute to the anti-apartheid activity spawned there; feel the freedom of the seas whale-watching where the Indian and Pacific oceans collide. Head to the top of Table Mountain or its partner, Lions Head. And then we head to Zululand, and one of Africa's conservation triumphs. Phinda, which literally means "the return," didn't even exist a decade ago. But thank goodness the local Zulu realized that seven ecosystems with adjacency to the Indian Ocean was a land that should be preserved, and they created an ecotourism gem. And so it is: a community that literally constructed lodges with the love of the land in their hearts, where clinics and classrooms benefit from your visit, where necessary bush clearing provides jobs and charcoal for the community, where environmental education is a priority for guests and locals. Breeding herds of elephants and lion prides were reintroduced; the number of cheetahs have more than doubled in a decade. Mountain and Rock, Forest and Vlei Lodges were hand-built, and built with careful consideration of your stay. Forest Lodge is our home here, complete with air-conditioned glass chalets on stilts; the torchwood trees of this rare sand forest seem to be in your room, and the forest creatures—the tiny red duiker, suni antelope, narina trogon and rare red squirrel—are right outside. The dining, lounge, viewing deck, and shaded pool areas of this intimate and secluded camp overlook a tranquil grassy vlei. There is also a forest "boma" (reeded enclosure) where memorable evenings are spent dining under the stars. It's a different Africa than the normal rough-and-tumble safari, with sophisticated touches, a rare sand forest at arm's length, even from bedside, and comfort all along the way.

DAY 1 | Cape Town
Your South African orientation will begin right after you're met at the Cape Town Airport, close to downtown. Your representative will help you gather up your rental car, and present you with your personalized travel journal. You'll have three days to work through its numerous recommendations on restaurants and myriad attractions of this South African city. You'll have the rest of today to get comfortable in your hotel, the Cape Grace, in the heart of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Prince Alfred himself (son of Queen Victoria) laid the first stone of this breakfront, and oh, how it has grown. Many of the same buildings from 1860 remain, although they may now house smart shops and restaurants popular with locals and visitors alike. Now luxury yachts moor alongside fishing boats, the smells of alfresco dining mix with the salt air, and promenades along the scenic wharves pass by modern cinemas and bars, craft shops and boutiques. Overnight at the Cape Grace.

DAY 2 | EXPLORING CAPE TOWN
Your big choice for today and tomorrow will be "by land or by sea"? Right off the coast is Robben Island, site of Nelson Mandela's imprisonment and a monument to his triumph over apartheid. And high-speed catamarans leave right from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Plan a full day of whale-watching tours to Hermanus, known as the Riviera of the South. It is the world's best point to spot a host of whales, even from shore, especially the southern right whale. The Two Oceans Aquarium is right there at the waterfront, with more than 300 underwater creatures. Confused? Take what they call around here a short "helicopter flip" to get the lay of the land, literally. Zoom over Camps Bay and Table Mountain, see the Cape with its bays and rocky coastlineget your bearings to plan your next move. The days in Cape Town are your own to fill; enjoy the hotel and the view, or book tours. (It's best to pre-book so you'll know you won't be left out.) Overnight Cape Grace Hotel. [B]

DAY 3 | EXPLORING CAPE TOWN
Another day to take in all Cape Town and environs has to offer. You may want to explore Table Mountain, with its cable way, and the city itself. Or head southeast to the Winelands, the rolling hills covered with vines that produce some of the world's best vintages. Spend a full day touring the Cape Peninsula. Take a flower tour. Or stroll the waterfront or the streets of Cape Town and its cosmopolitan ambience. It's your last day here, so take full advantage. Overnight at the Cape Grace. [B]

DAY 4 | DURBAN/ PHINDA RESOURCE RESERVE
Bring on the animals; the safari part of our trip will now commence. We fly into to Durban International Airport, then head to Zululand for three days in Phinda Resource Reserve. Phinda is a marvelous story of will and conservation. You'll enjoy the fruits of ten years of species reintroduction (Phinda means "return to the wild") on this private reserve. This array of ecosystems, from coral reefs that rival the Great Barrier Reef to rare sand forests, is cradled between the Ubombo Mountains to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. Giant leatherback turtles breed on pristine beaches, prehistoric crocodile, hippo, pelicans and flamingo are drawn to the freshwater lakes and river floodplains, black rhino and Africas great cats and predators roam the bush. There are seven distinct ecosystems in the reserve with palm savannah and montane bush to rare sand forest and dense thornveld. And the lodges were constructed by the local Zulu to minimize their effect on the land. Indeed, your forest lodge room feels a bit like a treehouse, on stilts, albeit with glass walls that bring the forest inside (oh, yes, and the slate floors, beechwood furniture, and carefully arranged hand towels, among numerous luxury touches). In the late afternoon, depart on your first safari. Your ranger will guide your open 4-wheel-drive vehicle through the stomping grounds of lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, and many others. And neither roads nor dark of night will stop his mission to locate as many bush species as possible. Predators hunt at night, so spotlights will help us follow the game, both victim and hunter. Overnight at Phinda Forest Lodge. [B,L,D]

DAY 5 | PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Our day is geared to the habits of the animals and the interests of the group. The large mammals roam in early morning and late afternoon, so we'll head out on our first game drive as soon as breakfast is wrapped up. Our target sightings will include rhino, lion, leopard, and giraffe. The lions, especially, are on the move; we hope to spot a pride on the hunt or taking the young on a stroll. Afternoon is siesta time for most, when leopards head up into the trees, and others retire to the shade of a tree or bush. Night is when the big boys go a'hunting (cheetahs and wild dogs hunt whenever), so we'll take our second game drive late in the day. In the meantime, explore the amazingly diverse ecosystemsseven in allin this one reserve. Your ranger will conduct guided walks eliciting all the secrets of the forest, montane, and more. There are many options that he'll review with you: birding, rhino tracking, boat cruises, canoeing, and community visits. Optional extras include coastal flights and beach excursions. Overnight at Phinda Forest Lodge. [B,L,D]

DAY 6 | PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE/ DEPARTURE
How can you possibly cover seven ecosystems in two days? Well, we have one more chance; our final early-morning game drive through the Reserve will spy as many creatures as possible, with some more ecotalk along the way. Then, back to Durban International Airport and flights home. [B]
