Tour: Plettenburg Bay / Garden Route Safari

[Back to Eco Tours]

The natural wonders of South Africa's southern coast may have been overshadowed by its storied past, but this week-long exploration will change your impressions of this rich region. The perennially green coastline east of the Cape, with its perfect climate, combines the attractions of any big game African safari with marine attractions and great views of the Indian Ocean. You begin at Kwandwe, a labor of love and one of South Africa's newest lodges. Kwandwe, which means "Place of the Blue Crane" in local Xhosa, is indeed a haven for great birds of the region. But the big game that historically lived in this region--the Big Five and more--have been reintroduced to the rich land around the Great Fish River. Carl DeSantis and Erica Stewart dreamed of opening their own lodge when on a safari just three years ago; their dream has turned into the reality of nine glass-and-thatched huts sprinkled atop the rolling veld surrounding the river. They added in good food and luxury touches, with African antiques and beautiful decor. They also refurbished the large farmhouse, former base for an ostrich farmer, to its earlier splendor. Two game drives a day, including night drives, will introduce you to this land--but be careful, next thing you know, you'll be opening up your own lodge! Then we move on to Plettenberg Bay, and the Hog Hollow Resort. Five days may seem like plenty of time to explore this Garden region, but not when you begin to review all that is here! Start with the town of Plettenberg and the beautiful bay that shares its name, but then: should you go whale-watching, head to more nature reserves, hike rich forests, visit the monkey sanctuary, explore the caves of the rocky coast? Each turn of the coastal road offers striking views and enticing coves and passes. Hiking, mountain biking, touring of towns with history abounding? Or take full advantage of Hog Hollow itself? This country lodge is set on the edge of an indigenous forest, with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and Tsitsikamma Mountains. Pristine beaches are close by, the pool has its own great view, and the food is superb. Accomplished chef Liesl Thompson tempts you to stay around with her great breakfasts and dinners. This is a new South Africa--a natural treasure.

DAY 1 | PORT ELIZABETH KWANDWE
When you alight at the Port Elizabeth airport, our friendly representative will meet you and provide a full overview of the area. After receiving some guidance for your drive to the lodge at Kwandwe, you'll collect your rental car and hit the road. The drive south will take about two hours. The Kwandwe Private Reserve is one of South Africa's newest--it just opened in October 2001. This "Place of the Blue Crane" was opened by two game lovers who fell in love with the region a mere three years ago, and made their dream a reality. You'll waste no time in exploring their reserve; after arrival at the welcoming farmhouse, Heatherton Towers, you will be met and transferred in open vehicles to your lodge. Your first game drive commences this afternoon. Swindle's exceptional wildlife rivals any safari destination, with the Big Five prominent throughout, as well as giraffe, zebra, kudu, eland, and a range of mammals. As a bonus, this is a malaria-free area. Meerkat will delight even when the big boys aren't around. But true to its Xhosa name, this is a bird haven. There is a permanent population of blue cranes, and these graceful birds are joined by more than 200 other recorded avian species. Kwandwe was the home of an ostrich farmer, so these oversized creatures are out and about as well. Overnight at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve.

DAY 2 | KWANDWE PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
You'll have another whole day for nature walks and game drives around Kwandwe. The nine suites are built high above the banks of the winding Great Fish River, so you have a great vista of the valley bushveld landscape right from your room. (Find some time today to jump into the private plunge pools with secluded river decks, right down the pebbled path.) Head out at leisure to check off as many species as you can spot. Meals at Kwandwe add mightily to your South African experience, be they in the form of a private Pan African dinner on the deck, in the candlelit dining room, in the boma, or as a bush banquet under the stars. Overnight at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. [B,L,D]

DAY 3 | GARDEN ROUTE/ PLETTENBERG BAY/HOG HOLLOW
It's hard to leave the veld luxury of Kwandwe, but Plettenberg Bay, one of jewels of the Garden Route, will make you quickly forget your disappointment. More than a village, not quite a town, the "main street" of Plettenberg Bay has just enough shops and cafes to keep you happy. But it's the setting that will make you want to stay, on the beautiful horseshoe bay of the same name, with all the natural splendor that the Africa's south coast has to offer. This is splendor in amazing soft sand beaches, and the local sea citizens that hang out here. Schools of dolphins are regulars, and whales frequent the swells around Lookout Rocks, especially in the migrating season of July to October. It's not unusual to see 50-foot humpbacks bobbing; there's also the rare Southern right, Bryde's, minke, and killer whales about. There will be plenty of time (five days) to explore this amazing coastal region, but first, settle into your home for the week, the Hog Hollow Resort. Set in the rolling hills along the coast, with the mountains on one side, the Indian Ocean on the other, this is the ideal base to explore the myriad attractions of the famous South African Garden Route. [B]

DAY 4 | EXPLORING THE GARDEN ROUTE/HOG HOLLOW
Your happy problem at Hog Hollow is which day trip to take, which of the array of activities or nature walks to select. Your hosts will help you over breakfast, though, so take in all the possibilities, and head out early to take full advantage of this rich South African coastline. You may want to continue in the safari mode, and meet even more of the local fauna. There are 50 different trails and guided walks to pick from, just exploring the local reserve (more than 57 bird varieties have been spotted right on the farm). Numerous nature reserves are within driving distance: the coastal Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve, the Pledge Nature Reserve at the Heads (near Knysna), the Tsitsikamma Forest, to name just a few. Or meet the local monkeys at Monkeyland primate sanctuary, with experienced naturalists as your guides. Overnight Hog Hollow Country Lodge. [B]

DAY 5 | EXPLORING THE GARDEN ROUTE/HOG HOLLOW
An "African Air Ramble," a flight along the coast, can start your day today with a literal overview of the ins and outs of this wondrous rocky coastline. It'll also give you a preview of a day of whale-watching. But you might want to get little closer to the cetaceans; numerous excursions into the Bay and beyond are available. Seals and otters also frolic in the region, and the dolphins will follow right along with your boat. You may just want to roam on land; this is a region where scenic drives are the norm. Stop by Storms River, De Vlugt trout farm, Nature Valley's beach and lagoon, Keurbooms Beach Arch Rock. There are even "castles" at Noetzie, with large stone parapets built by imaginative homeowners. Overnight Hog Hollow Country Lodge. [B]

DAY 6 | EXPLORING THE GARDEN ROUTE/HOG HOLLOW
If you've been a bit passive up to now, gazing at the flora and fauna and landscape in awe, it's time for a little action. Start slow with a hearty hike, maybe on the Otter Trail, or the Tsitsikamma Forest trail. Or explore Knysna forest on horseback, or mountain bike. Roam the caves of Tsitsikamma in a blackwater tubing adventure. Stroll with tame elephants. Get high with some abseiling (rappelling) or paragliding. Get some real adrenaline pumping at the world's highest bungee jump (more than 700 feet up, or is that down?) at Bloukrans River Bridge. Overnight Hog Hollow Country Lodge. [B]

DAY 7 | EXPLORING THE GARDEN ROUTE/HOG HOLLOW
It's your last full day in South Africa--use it to fill in the gaps, with active adventures, or nature experiences, or unrivalled sightseeing. A little bit of the local culture may be in order, if only to take home artwork for yourself or friends: batik, sun-dyed cloth, mohair, pottery, local furniture, jewelry. There's even a whale shop. You may need a day to unwind from your whirlwind week. The pristine Keurbooms Beach is only ten minutes away; Nature's Valley beach is equally close. But your resort has plenty to offer on its own. The pool's view is stunning on its own; sample more of the local delicacies at the Main House restaurant, or have a picnic along a stream back in the reserve. Overnight Hog Hollow Country Lodge. [B]

DAY 8 | RETURN TO PORT ELIZABETH
Time to pack up, and head north to the airport. Leave in time for your two-hour drive back to Port Elizabeth to drop off your rental car and board your flight home. [B]
