Founded in 1985, Selva Verde Lodge, is located in the lush lowlands of northeastern Costa Rica on a very large, private tract of virgin tropical rainforest and rich second-growth habitats. It is adjacent to Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Organization for Tropical Studies' field station, La Selva.
Twelve individual lodges built off the ground offer forty spacious double rooms with ample natural light, private baths and ceiling fans. Five recently renovated bungalows sleep up to four guests each. The rooms open into secluded wooden balconies with hammocks, perfect for absorbing the wonder and serenity of the rainforest on an afternoon siesta. Thatched, covered walkways link the rooms to the dining hall and the reception area.
While at Selva Verde, you may schedule an array of activities suited to every interest and ability, from relaxing in a hammock and absorbing the wonder of the forest, to rafting on the Sarapiqu?, or hiking Selva Verde's rainforest trails with a resident naturalist. We recommend a little of each to experience both the tranquility and the excitement of the natural beauty here.
Delicious meals featuring the local cuisine are served by gracious, native Costa Ricans. We recommend you try everything as all the flavors will be a memory you will want to have. An open and spacious dining room near the river harmonizes well with the jungle ambience. The resident managers, fluent in English and Spanish, are all attentive to the visitors' needs.
A variety of native peoples lived in Costa Rica before Columbus arrived in 1502. Northern groups were influenced by the Mayans, while the
Southern groups were more related to the indigenous people of South America. Spain colonized the Costa Rica area and then largely ignored it, because it was not rich in minerals. In 1821, Costa Rica declared independence from Spain along with several other Central American countries in a mostly peaceful revolution. It became a state of the Federal Republic of Central America. When the Republic collapsed in 1838, Costa Rica became a sovereign nation.
A two hour drive from San Jose on a new highway, Selva Verde is located in the northeastern rainforest of Costa Rica. With active volcanoes, hot springs, cloud forests and lush jungles, Costa Rica offers an incredible diversity of habitats, ecosystems and experiences for the curious traveler.
