All four of the lodges are surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and are situated on the reserve to insure privacy and comfort. Ceiba Tops and Explorama Lodge are right along the Amazon River 25 and 50 miles respectively downstream from Iquitos. ExplorNapo Lodge is on the Napo River, 100 miles into the Sususari Nature Reserve. Nearby, the ACEER Lab Station is an hour walk into the ExplorNapo Reserve. Hidden deep in primary rainforest, the ExplorTambos camping area is a two-hour well-worn walk from ExplorNapo. Make sure you have all your supplies for the hike if you want to see other parts of Explorama?s terrain.

No matter which of their lodges you choose, from their most rustic to their most luxurious, you will enjoy comfortable accommodations, scrumptious meals shrouded in the mists of the pristine rainforest.

Explorama Lodge is made up of four lodges and one safari-style camping area. Explorama, ExplorNapo and ACEER Lab Station are built in the traditional style with palm-thatched roofs. These lodges are long, one or two story buildings with the rooms all attached to one another by an elevated, covered walkway. This may sound complex but simplicity is what these lodges are made for. The rooms are unfussy with either two or three beds covered in mosquito netting with a washbasin and mirror. There is no electricity in the rooms, but oil lamps are provided for ambient light. You soon realize this is all the light you need. Pit toilets and unheated showers (you will welcome a cold shower!) are shared and housed in separate palm-thatched structures.

Ceiba Tops Resort has rooms that are much less rustic than the others, with two double beds per room and a private bath in each. Rooms have hot water, air-conditioning and electric lighting. The windows do not open in these rooms. Ceiba Tops Resort is more manicured looking than the other lodges with a pool and hydro massage to relax those tired muscles after a day?s journey in the rainforest.

ExplorTambos is a safari-type jungle camping area with tents on raised platforms. The simple and clean tents sleep one or two people. Bathroom facilities (pit toilets) are in a separate palm-thatched hut.

You will find no shortage of activities to fill your days at any of Explorama's Lodges. With knowledgable guides constantly offering interesting tidbits of information, we guarantee that you will leave an expert in rainforest ecology!
- ExplorNapo Lodge has the world?s longest canopy walkway. There is no charge to use the canopy walkway for ExplorNapo and ACEER Lab Station?s guests. Full-day excursions are available for people staying two nights or more at CEIBA TOPS Lodge & Resort. Cost for a minimum of two people is US$150.00 each. (Part of this fee is a donation to CONAPAC, the Peruvian NGO that built and maintains the canopy walkway and to the American ACEER Foundation which provided the seed text to build the walkway.

Even at mealtimes, the rainforest is right there for you. Each lodge has a covered and screened-in dining area with a thatch roof. An open-sided hammock house is attached to gaze away the day and evening while you digest. All of the lodges at Explorama serve locally grown food. Always fresh, the local specialties are the mainstay. Horizons will broaden while your stomach gets full on the buffet. It?s just plain good and you can come back as often as you like. You will get your fill of meat, the fresh catch of the day and vegetables.

Tables are arranged so you can meet and share stories of your day with the other lodge guests. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in lodge cost, and fresh drinking water, instant coffee and tea are available all day long to replenish your body. Vegetarian options are available with advanced notice.

Explorama Lodge founder, Peter Jensen, went to Peru almost 40 years ago to work on his doctoral thesis on the Huanuco Project. Falling in love with Iquitos, Peter never went back to defend his thesis--or anything else. He was hooked by the beauty of the land and stayed. Peter has always been lured by the exploration and discovery in travel. He recalls, ?When I was a little child, my favorite book was Chiquita, the Little Monkey of Far Away Brazil. I?d had it read to me thousands of times before I was able to read myself.? It is Peter?s childhood memory that breeds a sense of purpose at Explorama.

When the opportunity came to go to the Amazon, Peter could not say no. In order to make a living, he and his former partner fixed up a boat to take tourists on trips down the Amazon River. Some of their tourists wanted to sleep overnight in the rainforest, so Peter and his partner built their first ?lodge? of six rooms at Yanamono. Since then, the reserve has grown to the current 72-room Explorama Lodge on a vast, flourishing rainforest reserve.

A major part of Explorama?s appeal is the staff. Every group has its own multi-lingual guide to share the kind of knowledge only a local would know. The cooks and other staff are eager to exchange languages ? sharing a bit of Spanish while trying to learn a bit of English. Your comfort is on the their mind. Friendly and helpful, the staff will go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

- Parts of Explorama?s reserve were previously farmland, which was replanted with native flora. In time, the jungle rejuvenated.
- ExplorNapo is home to the longest canopy walkway in the world. Visitors hover back and forth, 120 feet up in the tree tops for a whole new perspective on the rainforest.
- The beautiful, vibrantly colored parrots, macaws and toucans will color your world because they inhabit the Explorama lodge?s reserves.
- Explorama trains and employs between 136 and 170 (depending on the season) locals as guides, cooks, and staff at their lodges.
- Using their own funds and donations from lodge guests, Explorama contributes all of the school supplies for 42 Ribere?o communities?that is over 3,000 students in 70 schools (Ribere?o is the name of the local indigenous population). One hundred and twenty-five teachers receive instructional materials for their classes from the collected donations. In the summer, Explorama, in conjunction with the Peruvian Board of Education, offers these teachers a course in environmental education. Preservation of the rainforest is a top priority.
