Namibia is the Wild West of Africa, in the most literal sense. Sitting on the far western side of the continent, it balances the safari attractions of the more popular east coast with a wide range of animals in a diverse collection of habitats. The tropical north, bordered by the Okavango River, is rich with hippos, zebras, giraffes, elephants, leopards. Etosha National Park is, in fact, one of the largest reserves in the world, drawing millions of flamingoes and assorted waterfowl to join the mega fauna at the numerous waterholes of the Etosha Pan. But the drama of the dry south and Atlantic coast makes Namibia's landscape as captivating as the creatures who call it home. Replacing savannahs are the massive red dunes of Sossusvlei, the tallest in the world; giant rock formations in the Namib Desert; the ghostly and aptly named Skeleton Coast, rife with shipwrecks and seals. The grasslands and rock paintings of Damaraland, the expanse of the Kalahari desert, and much more.

But the world's largest dunes at Sossusvlei, mountains that turn red and maroon at will, and the desert meeting the sea are dramatic sights. [more]
