Destination: Australia

[Back to Eco Tours]

Borne of the split-up of ancient Gondwanaland, Australia retained all the extremes, in landscapes and creatures out of some sci-fi novel. And it grew up with a great character drawn from that wild landscape and wacky notion of survival. The Great Barrier Reef leads the nature parade here, with great white sharks, giant clams, and poisonous lionfish injecting a hint of danger into the world's best diving. But just inland on Cape York are rich rainforests--with ecolodges to match. The Outback is as dry and harsh as its reputation proclaims, but red mountains at sunset, including the dramatic Ayers Rock (the cultural touchstone known as Uluru), are neither barren nor harsh. And you might just see a Jesus lizard sprinting by... But those are the things you know. Once you get beyond the Sydney Opera House, there is still much more to discover. Echidna and platypus, not just kangaroo and koala. Saltwater crocs and Tasmanian devils. Emus and cassowaries. Kakadu National Park and Fraser.
